福莱斯特航空母舰共建4艘，于50年代服役。是美国战后建造的第一级航空母舰，为装备新式喷气式专门设计。该级舰首次采用蒸汽弹射器，飞行甲板吸取英国航空母舰的设计经验，将传统的直通式飞行甲板必为斜角，直通混合布置的飞行甲板，使整个飞行甲板形成起飞，待机和降落3个区，可同时进行起飞和着舰作业，从而形成了美国当今空母舰的基本模式。该级舰的舰首，飞行甲板和机库，均采用封闭式，舰体人底部至飞行甲板形成整体式箱形结构，增强了整体强度，同时增大舰内容积，使载机量增多，飞机保障条件和舰员居住性有圈套改善。
CV-61“突击者”号航空母般是美国海军福莱斯特级航母的第三艘，也是美国海军中第二艘“突击者”命名的航空母舰（第一艘“突击者”是1934年服役、1946年退役的CV-4航母），1954年8月2日在纽波特纽斯造船厂开发兴建，1956年9月29日正式下水，1957年8月10日在诺福克海军地投入服役，首任舰长为查尔斯·布恩海军上校。
该型航母用来取代已经取消的美国级航母。但尺度更小。原先设计的排水量是60,000吨(标准)。除了尺寸稍小外，该航母能执行和美国级航母相同的任务。这是因为随着核武器和飞机的改进，核攻击飞机的尺寸已经减小。另外，它还兼有战术（非核）角色，这在朝鲜战争中得到了证明。

设计：该舰的最初设计包括一个直通的轴向飞行甲板，可折叠的烟囱和可伸缩的驾驶室。斜角甲板技术的到来导致该舰做了较大的改动：包括，一个斜角甲板，一个大的右舷岛式上建，烟囱从岛式上建的中部穿过。所有该级舰的四艘都有重炮火力。
改进：服役后火炮数量很快减少。在1977年拆除了所有的火炮。后来还改进了电子系统。
现代化改装：该级舰的三艘在二十世纪80年代进行了延寿改装。该计划是将该舰的服役期从30年延长到40-50年。改装后的状态如下：排水量接近81,500吨（满载），最大尺度317 x 76 x 11.3 米，装备2或3座8单元的北约海麻雀发射装置，3座密集阵火炮，80架飞机。
1992年，“福莱斯特”号（CV59）用作训练航空母舰，“突击者”号（CV61）于1993年退役，“萨拉托加”号（CV60）于1994年8月退役。
